Pakistan Navy seized narcotics valued at around $96 million during two operations in the Arabian Sea, the military’s media wing said on Wednesday.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Pakistan Navy Ship Yarmook carried out the operations at a considerable distance from the Pakistani coast.
The ship intercepted two dhows and recovered around 850 kilogrammes of ice and 2,000kg of hashish/cannabis from hidden compartments inside the vessels. The drugs, estimated to be worth $96m, have been taken into custody and will be handed over to the relevant authorities for further action and legal proceedings, ISPR said.
The military’s media wing said the operations demonstrated the navy’s continued surveillance at sea and its efforts to prevent illegal trafficking and strengthen maritime security in the region.
President Asif Ali Zardari also praised the navy for the operations.
In a statement, he described the navy’s efforts to prevent illegal activities in Pakistan’s maritime areas and protect regional maritime security as commendable.
