The government has increased the petroleum levy on high-octane fuel by Rs200 per litre. The new price has hit Rs535/litre.

According to PMO press release, the decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via video link, focusing on fuel used in luxury vehicles.

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, and other senior officials.

The prime minister noted that the levy on high-octane fuel—primarily used in high-end luxury vehicles—should be increased. He approved an additional Rs200 per litre increase, raising the levy from Rs100 per litre.

The government expects the measure to save Rs9 billion per month, with the savings earmarked to provide relief to the general public.

“The prices of fuel used in ordinary vehicles used by the lower and middle classes have not been increased, only the price of high-octane fuel used in luxury vehicles has been increased,” the PMO said, adding that this would not cause an increase in the price of public transport or airfare.
