In a major boost to regional security, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif have signed the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA). Under this landmark deal, any armed aggression against one country will be treated as an aggression against both, reinforcing the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.

The agreement aims to strengthen defence cooperation, enhance security, and promote peace in the region and beyond. According to the joint statement, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan share a historic partnership spanning over eight decades, rooted in mutual strategic interests and close defence collaboration.

The SMDA underscores the depth of Pak-Saudi ties, particularly in military and defence matters. Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir played a key role in bringing the agreement to fruition. With the signing, Pakistan is now officially recognised as a partner in protecting the Two Holy Mosques, a significant symbol of trust and cooperation.

The agreement is designed to respond to current and future threats, improving readiness and integrating defence capabilities between the two countries. It ensures that both nations can jointly counter any challenge to their security or territorial integrity.

The Foreign Office noted that the visit “is expected to formalise cooperation across diverse fields, reflecting both sides’ commitment to further deepen their longstanding fraternal ties.”

Beyond defence, the agreement carries economic and diplomatic significance. It allows both countries to leverage each other’s strengths for mutual security and stability. It also builds on decades of joint military training, multilateral exercises, and defence industrial cooperation, reinforcing a shared goal of promoting regional and global peace.

During the visit, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at Al Yamama Palace. Talks included high-level delegations from both sides, reviewing historical ties, strategic relations, and areas of common interest.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality, while extending his best wishes for the continued well-being of King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the people of Saudi Arabia.
