A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officer was shot dead after intervening to save a woman during an alleged abduction attempt on Islamabad's Ninth Avenue, police said on Sunday.
According to the police, Group Captain Asim Tariq was driving on Ninth Avenue when he noticed a woman getting off a motorcycle while the rider was pulling her by the hand.
The officer turned his vehicle around and stopped near the motorcycle. The woman then ran to the other side of his vehicle to seek protection. The police said the suspect, identified as Saad, argued with Group Captain Tariq before opening fire on him.
The officer later succumbed to his injuries, while the suspect escaped from the scene.
In her statement to police, the woman said the suspect was her office colleague who had offered to drop her at work. She alleged that he changed the route and attempted to take her to another location, prompting her to resist.
She told investigators that Group Captain Tariq intervened in time and ensured her safety. Police said raids were under way to arrest the suspect. The martyred officer is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
