Since the launch of the new Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS), Karachi traffic police have issued 29,609 e-tickets for various traffic rule violations, according to official data.
The system, inaugurated last week by the Sindh Chief Minister at the Central Police Office (CPO), replaces the manual challan process with a fully automated AI-integrated e-ticketing system. It uses advanced CCTV cameras to detect offences such as speeding, red-light jumping, and helmet non-compliance.
Of the total tickets issued, 17,639 were for drivers not wearing seatbelts, while 6,362 were for motorcyclists riding without helmets. Police also fined 1,967 motorists for speeding and 1,655 for running red lights.
Additionally, 943 tickets were issued for mobile phone use while driving, 298 for tinted windows, and 165 for parking in prohibited areas. Other violations included wrong-side driving, lane indiscipline, and overloading.
In June, the Sindh government decided that e-challans would be delivered to registered home addresses, with unpaid fines blocking vehicle sales or transfers.
The initiative follows a sharp rise in traffic accidents in Karachi, where nearly 500 people were killed and 4,879 injured in 2024. The government has since restricted heavy vehicles during daytime and made fitness certificates mandatory.
