KP orders ramps, accessible entrances to govt, private buildings for persons with disabilities

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed relevant authorities to ensure that government and private buildings are made accessible to persons with disabilities.
The Social Welfare Department has issued a letter to all relevant departments and institutions, directing them to provide safe and convenient access to offices and public places for persons with disabilities.
According to the directives, the needs of persons with disabilities must be taken into consideration in the design and accessibility of buildings. Accessible ramps, entrances and doors for wheelchair users are to be ensured in government and private buildings.
The authorities have also been directed to establish designated parking spaces for persons with disabilities near government buildings.
For visually impaired persons, the department has called for the installation of tactile pathways and appropriate guidance signage. Accessible washrooms are also to be provided in government buildings.
Where required, accessible lifts should be installed to facilitate the movement of persons with disabilities.
The directives further call for suitable seating and waiting facilities, as well as accessible service counters in government offices.
Appropriate signage has also been recommended for people with hearing, visual and physical disabilities.
The government has emphasized that persons with disabilities should have equal access to government services and public buildings.
The letter has been sent to all administrative secretaries, commissioners and deputy commissioners for implementation.
