KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced that all government and private schools and colleges in Karachi will remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, following days of heavy rainfall and urban flooding across the city.

Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah confirmed the decision after consultations with city authorities monitoring the deteriorating situation.

Torrential monsoon rains over the past 48 hours have left large parts of Karachi waterlogged, with major neighborhoods including Gulistan-e-Johar, Korangi, Nazimabad, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed among the worst affected.

Main thoroughfares such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, and University Road remain partially or fully blocked due to floodwater.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more rain through the week, raising fears of prolonged disruption.

City authorities have begun drainage and relief operations, deploying pumps and emergency teams to clear roads and restore access. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of inundated areas.

Officials said the closure is aimed at ensuring student and staff safety, as many localities continue to face power outages, traffic gridlocks, and stalled vehicles. Further closures may be announced depending on weather conditions.
