KARACHI: The Karachi Industrial Water Park (TP-1) has been inaugurated as a major wastewater treatment and recycling initiative aimed at conserving freshwater and improving the city’s long-term water security.

The project will have a total treatment capacity of 100 million gallons per day (MGD), with treated municipal wastewater being supplied for industrial use. It is designed to reduce industries’ dependence on freshwater resources.

TP-1 is being developed in two phases. The first phase will provide 35 MGD of treated water, while the second phase will add another 65 MGD to reach the project’s full capacity.

Work on Phase II has also begun, with completion expected within six months. Once fully operational, the project is expected to supply up to 100 MGD of treated industrial process water by 2027.

By replacing freshwater with recycled wastewater for industrial activities, the project is expected to reduce pressure on river and other freshwater sources, allowing more water to remain available for drinking and domestic needs.

The initiative is being implemented by the Sindh government in collaboration with public and private sector stakeholders as part of efforts to promote sustainable urban development, environmental protection and long-term water security in Karachi.
