Officials have confirmed that the work on Green-Line BRT project is set to resume in Karachi this week after halting for six long years.

Raja Khaliq-uz-Zaman Ansari, spokesperson to the federal government of Sindh, claimed that phase-II of the BRT project will be completed by December 2026. This will include a 1.8 km corridor built from Numaish Chowrangi to Municipal Park near Jamia Cloth Market.

The official announcement to commence the project will be made jointly by the Mayor of Karachi, Murtuza Wahab, officials from MQM-P and officials from the executing agency PIDCL (Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Ltd) on Monday.

The work on this project was basically delayed as the city’s administration raised objections on the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC). A meeting was then held between the PIDCL team and the mayor to resolve those issues, hence, paving the way for the project to move forward.

Phase 1 of the BRT project runs from Surjani Town to Numaish Chowrangi, accommodating around 80,000 passengers on a daily basis with 80 buses operating on that route.

When Phase-II is accomplished, 70 buses will be deployed on that route, catering to 110,000 commuters between Surjani Town and Jamia Cloth Market.

The urgency to complete this project has come after much-needed coordination between the federal and Sindh governments, along with the Karachi municipal authorities.

Karachi has been severely affected by never-ending traffic congestion from a long time and the completion of this BRT project will definitely bring significant improvement in travel time for the people of the metropolitan city.
