A Karachi court has ordered the owners and driver of a garbage truck to pay over Rs 40.2 million in compensation to the family of a man killed in a 2017 accident.

The Senior Civil Judge of South annouced his order on a suit seeking recovery of Rs.4,27,62,959/- under provision of Fatal Accidents Act 1855.

The incident occurred in November 2017 in North Karachi when the deceased, Umar, and his friend Ghayas were riding a motorcycle and were struck from behind by the truck, resulting in Umar’s death and injuries to Ghayas.

The civil lawsuit had named six defendants, including the truck owners, Clifton Cantonment Board, a private bank, and the driver. The court held the truck owners and driver responsible, while acquitting the remaining parties.

The court clarified that previous acquittals in the related criminal case do not affect the civil compensation ruling.

Evidence, including damage to the truck’s front, confirmed the liability of the owners and driver, who did not contest the compensation claim.
