The federal government has authorised the deployment of Pakistan Army troops and assets in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to maintain security following the imposition of an emergency and governor’s rule in the province.
The Interior Ministry issued the authorisation through SRO (1)/2026 on Sunday under Article 245 of the Constitution, according to a notification.
The order allows the army to assist civil authorities in protecting citizens’ lives, people and property, as well as government installations. The deployment will remain in place for the duration of the earlier proclamation imposing the emergency and governor’s rule.
The notification states that KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, in consultation with the Military Operations Directorate at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, will determine the number of troops and assets required.
The emergency and governor’s rule were imposed after President Asif Ali Zardari approved recommendations from the federal cabinet under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, according to a statement from the President House.
The order has been circulated to relevant officials and institutions, including the president’s secretary, the prime minister’s adviser, the KP home secretary, the provincial police chief and the Peshawar High Court registrar.
