In a tragic incident in Multan, a 15-year-old orphan named Waseem Abbas was chased and crushed to death by his employer, who was driving a vehicle. The incident was recorded on CCTV footage that went viral on social media. The tragedy occurred at a private housing society.
According to media reports, the victim had been working as an electrician trainee with the suspect contractor, who was identified as Tauqeer Nazir. Eyewitnesses and police said the victim fled the scene following an argument over "mistreatment and strict working conditions."
Earlier, Waseem Abbas had been living in an orphanage run by an NGO before being sent to the construction site to learn skills. While the contractor was arrested on charges of murder, some members of the orphanage were also detained for questioning. Earlier, the suspect claimed it was an accident, but the CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts contradicted his claims, leading to his arrest and charges.
Waseem Abbas, originally from Muzaffargarh, has been buried in his ancestral graveyard in Daultpur, with only close relatives and orphanage officials attending his funeral, while police continue their investigation.
Netizens have taken to social media to condemn the incident and call for strict action against those involved, as gruesome videos circulate online. The incident has raised concerns over the effectiveness of child labour laws, as thousands of such children remain vulnerable and are forced by economic circumstances to work for employers who treat them with carelessness and disregard.
The incident has also sparked debate over the role of society and NGOs in the treatment of orphans, who are left at the mercy of others who strip them of their humanity.
