The remains of a medical student, who died after falling from a car at Karachi’s Do Darya last year, were exhumed on Wednesday to determine the exact cause of his death.

23-year-old Sultan Zafar died on July 23, 2025 after suffering severe head injuries under circumstances that remain unclear. He had remained in a coma for a week before being declared brain-dead.

His mother, Dr Mehr Afroze, had donated her son's both kidneys to two patients at SIUT.

A case was also registered at the Sahil police station on a complaint filed by Dr Afroze under Section 320 (qatl-i-khata by rash or negligent driving) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The court recently ordered the exhumation of the deceased's remains to establish the circumstances and cause of his death. The procedure was carried out by a special medical board headed by Dow University of Health Sciences professor Dr Saba Sohail in the presence of the police surgeon and other officials.

The medical team collected various samples from the remains and preserved them for laboratory analysis. Photographs were also taken from different angles for forensic examination and investigation.

Police officials and members of the medical board said that a final opinion on the cause of Sultan Zafar’s death would be given after laboratory analysis of the samples.
