Basant to be celebrated in Lahore for 10 days

Basant celebrations will return to Lahore for 10 days next year, with festivities planned from January 29 to February 7, the Punjab government said on Wednesday.

The celebrations will be paused on February 5 for Kashmir Day under the schedule approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The government has asked departments to start preparations early and focus on arrangements for public safety and convenience throughout the festival.

During a meeting, CM Maryam described Basant as a cultural celebration for Lahore and said the extended event would help highlight Punjab’s traditions and the historic identity of the provincial capital.

The chief minister also called on citizens to follow safety rules and celebrate responsibly. She said that protecting human lives should remain a priority during the festivities.

Lahore hosted Basant earlier this year from February 6 to 8, bringing back the festival after an 18-year gap.

The festival had been banned in 2007 following deaths and serious injuries linked to sharp kite strings, particularly among motorcyclists and their passengers, as well as incidents of aerial firing.
