Azma Bukhari, the information minister of Punjab, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Bhati Gate incident in Lahore.
She claimed that she is unable to express the sentiments of CM Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, after she was informed of the deaths of a mother and her infant daughter due to an uncovered manhole near Bhati Gate earlier this week.
Speaking to reporters, Bukhari stated that the CM was following every moment of the case closely and had granted a 48-hour window for a full inquiry.
According to reports, the initial information about the incident came from Rescue 1122, and then the incident was reported to the police by the woman’s father. The police, allegedly, took him to the police station during the early stages of the investigation.
Furthermore, Bukhari said the woman’s husband and family were questioned after reports of a personal dispute with her spouse surfaced. However, the authorities claim the deaths were caused by the fall into the open sewer.
Moreover, she emphasized that the treatment of the woman’s father by police will also be reviewed, and anyone found responsible for misconduct will face consequences.
Azma Bukhari’s comments came amid public outrage after the tragic Bhati Gate incident, which has raised questions on safety and accountability of city’s infrastructure.
