A man in the US state of Missouri amputated his legs to obtain insurance money by showing it as a tractor accident.

Sherriff County has recently wrapped up the investigation of a weird case. The authorities began a probe into the matter in November 2023, when a 60-year-old claimed that he had an alleged accident and lost his legs.

He had claimed to have lost both legs in a brush hog accident. The authorities believe that some points in the story left them in doubt. The absence of his severed legs and unusually clean wounds raised doubt about how he could have been in the path of a tractor-operated brush hog.

“If a brush hog did it, it would have been a bloody, gory mess. I have seen this type of accident before. This was not like that,” said Torey Thompson, a lieutenant with the Howell County Sheriff’s Office.

The officer and medical person in the office entered into a puzzle on the story of the man who soon after his accident applied for insurance money. Subsequently, they began an investigation which revealed that a Florida man had visited with a hatchet and severed his legs for a fee.

Inquiry uncovered that the 60-year-old implemented a scheme to commit insurance fraud, and claimed before the authorities that his legs had been amputated since he no longer had any use for them.

Furthermore, it revealed that the accused was suffering from paraplegia. He applied this scheme when he came to know that his legs could not work more.

“It was a poorly executed plan, I have never seen anything quite like it,” said Lieutenant Thompson.
