“What will she wear?” Vogue criticized for headline on Mamdani’s wife

American fashion magazine Vogue faced backlash online after sharing an Instagram post about New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s wife Rama Duwaji. The post, titled “What Might She Wear?”, stated that although she avoids media attention, her fashion sense is striking.

Zohran Mamdani has secured victory in New York City’s mayoral election, making him the youngest person to hold the position in almost a century.

His wife, 28-year-old illustrator, animator, and ceramist Rama Duwaji, whom he married in a City Hall ceremony earlier this year, now holds the title of New York’s first Gen Z First Lady.

Duwaji is a highly accomplished artist who has contributed her work to The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Vogue, and has collaborated with major brands such as Apple, Spotify, and Tate Modern. 

Born in Houston, Texas, to Syrian parents, Duwaji later moved to Dubai and attended school in Qatar. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed her master’s at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

She often uses her art to reflect her political views and has been vocal on a number of issues, including the genocide in Gaza.

Although she generally avoids public attention, her personal style has already become a point of interest.

Vogue recently shared a photo of Zohran Mamdani and Rama Duwaji with the caption, “Rama Duwaji is New York’s Gen Z First Lady. What might she wear?”

However, the caption did not sit well with many social media users. Several netizens expressed frustration, calling the headline unnecessary and trivial. One Instagram user commented, “Clothes. She’s going to wear clothes.” Another wrote, “Is this really the title? Are you all serious?”
