A member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family was found unresponsive on a west London street while a three-year-old child in her care was barefoot near a busy road, Daily Mail reported.
Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, was found slumped against railings beside an unconscious man, while the child was found playing with a scooter near moving traffic.
The Southwark Crown Court was told that she had taken cocaine in the days before the incident in June. Prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour said that members of the public intervened after noticing that the child was unattended and had no shoes on.
Al Nahyan remained unresponsive for around 30 minutes after police arrived. When she regained consciousness, she allegedly reacted erratically, asking: “This is not a slaughterhouse, why do you care so much? Why are you so worried?”
Police found drug paraphernalia when they searched her, but no illegal substances, according to The Times.
Al Nahyan pleaded guilty to one count of child neglect at Southwark Crown Court.
The court heard that she had been receiving treatment for drug addiction at the Priory centre in Woking, Surrey, since July.
Her defence lawyer, Stephen Vullo KC, said she had stopped using drugs after entering treatment and had shown “significant remorse and resolve to overcome her addiction”.
He said she had not taken drugs on the day of the incident but was exhausted after using cocaine in the preceding days.
Vullo said Al Nahyan planned to rent a property in the Guildford area and continue treatment as a day patient, including attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
Judge Johnson sentenced Al Nahyan to a two-year community order with a rehabilitation requirement. He also fined her £5,000 and ordered her to pay £1,000 in costs. The court heard that she receives a monthly allowance of £8,000.
Al Nahyan is connected by marriage to Abu Dhabi’s ruling royal family.
