US President Donald Trump has announced an additional 25% tariff on India as punishment for importing Russian oil, according to a document shared on the White House website.
The executive order said that India is “currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” adding that it is “necessary and appropriate” to apply the new 25% tariff on Indian goods.
The new tariffs will come into effect in 21 days while the previous 25% tariff is set to take effect on Thursday.
The US president's latest order takes total duties on import of Indian goods into the US to 50 per cent, which are 20 per cent more the tariff on China and 21 per cent more than on Pakistan.

“I have received additional information from various senior officials on, among other things, the actions of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to the situation in Ukraine,” read the order.
Earlier this week, the US president threatened to impose new tariffs on India, saying they were helping Russia wage war in Ukraine.
“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,” he wrote on social media.
