A local school in Mumbai dismissed its principal for liking several pro-Palestine posts on the microblogging platform 'X', stating that her social media activity does not align with their “ethos of unity and inclusivity.”

The principal, Parveen Shaikh, had previously refused to resign when asked by the management of Somaiya Vidyavihar school for liking pro-Palestine posts that were perceived as sympathetic to Hamas.

In an interview with Indian media, Shaikh expressed her dismay over the decision, stating, “I was shocked to know about my sacking from social media even before receiving a termination notice from the management. The termination notice is completely illegal and based on defamatory lies peddled against me.”

The administration defended its decision to terminate the principal, asserting that her actions “have been starkly misaligned with the values we cherish.”

“I am disappointed that in spite of my hard work, dedication, and sincere contribution to the school’s growth, the management chose not to stand by me in the face of this vitriolic public vilification campaign run against me, and instead fell prey to it and took this drastic and unwarranted action. This action appears to be politically motivated,” Shaikh said who had served in school for 12 years, with seven years as head.

According to Indian news sources, an online platform published an article on April 24, highlighting Miss Shaikh's pro-Palestine stance and accusing her of being a "Hamas sympathiser," "anti-Hindu," and a supporter of "Islamist Umar Khalid."

"We firmly advocate for the right to freedom of expression, yet we acknowledge that it comes with responsibilities and must be exercised with regard for others," the management explained its decision to sack the school head.
