World under lockdown over COVID-19

A series of photos of empty places around the world, usually filled with people all year round, is a symbol of the coronavirus’s powerful impact on society and life.

The world is now at a standstill. Cricket stadiums in the country set for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 have been ordered to go spectator-less as the tournament continues. Schools are shut down and cultural sites closed amid fears of the coronavirus.

Italy’s tourist sites are hauntingly quiet, and Islam’s holiest site, the Khana Kaaba, normally bustling with pilgrims performing Hajj, sits in isolation.

Theme parks have been emptied and tourist business halted. Countries around the world have shut down their borders to travellers, and airlines worldwide have suspended flights.

Quarantine measures around the globe have put a halt to fast-paced life as the world tackles the outbreak of the pandemic.
