Victim of racism George Floyd’s death anniversary is being observed today
The death anniversary of African American Hip Hop Artist George Perry Floyd Jr. is being observed today.
George was murdered by the police during an arrest on May 25 2020, as he was suspected that he may have used a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis.
Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds.
George told them he could not breathe. However, he became motionless with no pulse.
Chauvin was fired and charged with second-degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter.
After Floyd’s death, protests were held globally against the use of excessive force by police officers against black suspects and lack of police accountability.
Earlier, in April, a United States police officer has shot and killed a 20-year-old Black man, named Daunte Wright, after stopping his vehicle for a traffic violation in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to media reports, protests erupted after the incident which met with teargas and rubber bullets fired by the police.
