Verdict against Musharraf is ‘unconstitutional’: Attorney General

KARACHI: Attorney General of Pakistan Anwar Mansoor has said that the judgement of the special court in Musharraf high treason case is ‘unconstitutional,’ against legal parameters and based on deceitful intentions, media reported on Thursday.

The attorney general said the government will take action against the judge who authored the verdict and will send the case to the Supreme Judicial Council for further progress. He said, “We will not accept this decision.”

Mansoor said, “I condemn the special court’s verdict which is biased and is against the Constitution.” He said strong remarks have been issued in the detailed verdict by the judges.

He further said that the judges should be tried for authoring the biased judgement. “A judge who is mentally challenged should not be allowed to conduct hearing of cases and should be suspended immediately.”

He argued that the verdict has the sentiments of millions of people and is a plot to build rifts within state institutions.

The AG said that the Pakistan Army has been attacked in the judgment.

He said, “I will make efforts to revert the court’s verdict and make it void.”

Earlier today, the special court announced its detailed verdict in the said case. The court awarded death sentence to Musharraf and ordered to hang his body in D-Chowk if he dies before undergoing the said punishment.

The court also ordered that the facilitators and uniformed officers, who were involved in breaking the Constitution should also be taken to task.

The government and the Armed Forces of Pakistan showed indignation over the verdict. The government has been making efforts to create unity and avoid clash among the state institutions.

The high treason case commenced in 2013 and the trial was conducted for six years.
