US refuses to withdraw troops from Afghanistan by May 1

US President Joe Biden on Thursday said that it would not be possible for his administration to meet the May 1 deadline for withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, as was agreed upon in the deal with Taliban in February 2020.

“The US troops cannot stay in Afghanistan for longer time but the US has to weigh the circumstances for withdrawal,” Joe Bien said while addressing a press conference in Washington. He further said the delay in withdrawal was based on technical reasons.

His statement came after US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Afghanistan earlier this week and met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and top US Commander General Scott Miller.

On the other hand, Germany has also delayed withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, after its parliament gave green light for the troops to stay in Afghanistan until Januar 2022.
