The United States of America has halted all trips from Europe to the United States for 30 days in a bid to stop the spread of novel coronavirus after it was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.
US President Donald Trump said in a televised speech that the European Union had failed to take the same steps as the US in fighting coronavirus.
He declared that he has decided to take strict but appropriate steps to protect Americans from the novel coronavirus and has decided to suspend all travel from over two dozen European countries.
“The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight,” he said.
The ban does not include UK passengers who have recently entered the EU, Trump said.
The ban would only extend to foreign nationals and not to US residents. Acting Deputy Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security Ken Cuccinelli in a tweet said the ban would not extend to’ citizens or lawful permanent residents or their families.’
