Traffic laws: SHC orders arresting parents along with children
The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the relevant authorities to arrest parents along with their children over underage driving while confiscating their vehicles.
Many deadly traffic incidents occur because underage drivers, mainly bikers, come out on busy roads, streets and highways.
The authorities have been asked to hold a campaign across the province, particularly in the provincial metropolis–Karachi, issuing warning to the parents of underage bikers that they would also be held accountable.
Meanwhile, same responsibility will lie on the owners of the vehicles meant for transportation: rickshaws, qingqis, and trucks as sometimes these vehicles are handed over to adolescents for meeting their financial needs.
According to the court’s orders, the cases of fatal road accidents involving teenagers are alarming and have caused widespread concerns which need to be addressed by effective intervention.
The teenagers who did not know how to safely operate a motorcycle could end up injuring themselves fatally and also causing serious injuries to other people, it added.
People are strictly advised to avoid giving their vehicles to teenagers as new measures will now hold parents responsible for their negligence.
