The social media video sharing app TikTok has overtaken YouTube in the United States and United Kingdom.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the research of an app monitoring firm has revealed that app users in the United States and the United Kingdom are spending more time on TikTok rather than on YouTube.
The app monitoring firm ‘App Annie’ has said TikTok “upended the streaming and social landscape”.
Remember that YouTube is the most viewed app in the world as a whole. YouTube has more than two billion monthly users, while TikTok has 700 million monthly users.
Jamie MacEwan, from Enders Analysis, said, “TikTok was spending big to attract users, but they were not necessarily hanging around for long compared to other social media.”
Earlier, TikTok had introduced new features to protect youngsters and encourage them to spend less time in front of the screen. The new feature allows downloads to be disabled by default after a certain period of time for users between the ages of 13 and 15.
Users between the ages of 16 and 17 are sent a pop-up message before sharing the video, with options of friends only or restricted to them. The user has to select who to share his video with. Creators of this age are also given the option to make their videos downloadable.
On August 22, the Punjab Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) had imposed a ban on TikToker’s entry into parks. According to the PHA, all Tiktokers would be bound to take permission from PHA’s officials for the access to the parks.
The decision was taken after the horrific harassment incident which took place at Minar-e-Pakistan, Lahore, on the Independence Day.
In July this year, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had blocked TikTok application and website across Pakistan after the Chinese company failed to take inappropriate content down from the social media platform.
