An official for the International Cricket Council (ICC) stated that the T20 World Cup in Australia this year could be pushed back to 2022, PTI reported.

The tournament is scheduled to run from 18 October and 15 November. The fate of the game, however, is unclear because of the coronavirus pandemic that has put the sporting tournaments on hold.

A member of the governing body of the sport said the organisation is currently looking at various options.

“The first option is having the World T20 as per schedule with a 14-day quarantine and crowds being allowed,” he said. “The back-up for this option could be a tournament in empty stadiums. The third option could be shifting the tournament to 2022.”

He added that the idea of postponing the tournament might not satisfy Australia, which already hosted this year’s women’s tournament.

India, on the other hand, will host the tournament’s 2021 edition.
