The Nightingale of Thar, Mai Bhagi’s Death Anniversary

Mai Bhagi, popularly known as the Nightingale of Thar, passed away on July 7th, 1986. Her 34th death anniversary was observed by her fans.
She was a folk musician, born in Mithi, Thar. Born as Bhag Bhari (which means ‘Lucky person’) she started her career when record producer and husband of legendary folk singer Abida Parveen’s husband, Sheikh Ghulam Hussain, offered her to record her voice at radio Pakistan.
Mai Bhagi’s famous song was “Kharee Neem ke Neeche”, with which her stardom rose to peak. Both of her parents were famous singers of their times.
She sang songs in Thari and Sindhi. The government of Pakistan awarded her with Pride of Performance in 1981. She received a number of awards for her talent, including Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai award and Sachal Sarmast Award.
She continued her singing career until her demise in 1986, in Tharparkar, at the age of 66.
