Earlier today, The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the seven year sentence and one year sentence of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and her husband Captain Safdar respectively in Avenfield reference.
Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the Islamabad High Court reserved the decision after the arguments of the parties were completed.
The accountability court had sentenced Maryam Nawaz to seven years and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar to one year in the Avenfield reference.
In the Avenfield reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against the Sharif family on July 6, 2018, the accountability court of Islamabad sentenced former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif to 10 years, his daughter Maryam Nawaz to 7 years and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar to one year of imprisonment.
Justice Muhammad Bashir of the Accountability Court also imposed a fine of £8 million on Nawaz Sharif and £2 million on Maryam Nawaz.
The court also ordered the confiscation of the London-based Avenfield property.
Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against this decision on September 19, 2018, IHC suspended the decision of the NAB court and ordered their release.
A month after this decision, on October 22, 2018, NAB challenged the decision of the Islamabad High Court regarding the release of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Muhammad Safdar in the Supreme Court.
However, the Supreme Court upheld the decision of the Islamabad High Court in the Avenfield reference and rejected the appeal of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against the suspension of the punishment of the PML-N leaders.
