A student of the University of Sindh named Irfan Jatoi, was killed in alleged police encounter on Sunday in Sukkur.
According to reports, 25-year-old Jatoi was picked up by the police from the varsity’s hostel in Jamshoro on February 10.
Police have claimed that the deceased was part of a car lifting gang, besides being involved in robberies and other crimes.
The alleged encounter took place in the limits of Jhangro Police Station while the police also informed that there were three accomplices of Jatio who had escaped the scene.
However, people on social media have condemned the alleged encounter and they are demanding justice for Irfan Jatoi with a hashtag campaign #JusticeForIrfanJatoi.
“The police received a tip-off that some outlaws have been seen…with the noticeable intent of committing a robbery,” said SSP Sukkur Irfan Samo as quoted by The Express Tribune.
According to the SSP, the suspects opened fire on the police as soon as the police party reached the crime scene. He was wanted in several crimes by the police of different districts, Samo claimed, adding that details of his crimes were being collected from other districts.
According to media reports, Jatoi’s family had approached a court when he was picked up before his alleged encounter.
Moreover, the district police was summoned on February 18 but they expressed a lack of knowledge about his arrest.
The family has alleged the Sukkur Police were demanding bribes for his release for the last three weeks.
According to the police, the student was involved in stealing a vehicle belonging to a relative of a Sukkur-based politician.
“He had agreed to return the vehicle but backtracked on his promise after which he was arrested.” said the police (reported in The Express Tribune).
