Famous Islamic scholar and cleric Maulana Tariq Jamil has posted a message on social media clarifying that he has started a business to support religious activities and seminaries.
The clarification is a response to news reports that Maulana has launched his own clothing brand called ‘MTJ’. However, the scholar receives mixed reactions on social media.
According to Maulana, during the COVID-19 pandemic, God made him think that he should start a business so he could spend the earnings on seminaries and religious activities.
“In the sub-continent, we don’t like the idea of religious scholars involving in trading and business… I don’t know where did this tradition come from,” Maulana states in the message.
He also mentions that Imam Abu Hanifa was also an influential trader of his time.
He has further clarified that they (along with his friends) have not done this with an intention to do business or to compete any one in the market.
“I wish my madaris (Islamic seminaries) stand on their own feets (with this initiative),” Maulana concludes his message.
