A South African woman has given birth to 10 babies in Pretoria, local media reported on Tuesday.
In what would become a new world record, the 37-year-old Gosiame Thamara Sithole gave birth to her decuplets–seven boys and three girls–leaving behind Malian woman Halima Cissé who gave birth to her nine children in May this year.
A family member has said on Twitter that the newborns are very little and still in incubators because of their premature birth at 29 weeks. However, the relative further stresses that the name of the private hospital, where the babies were born, could not be disclosed to “avoid media frenzy”.
Earlier, it was being thought that the news might be based on speculations, but later some officials claimed to meet the family, followed by a press release.
Reports earlier indicated that Sithole was expecting eight babies but two apparently missed the scan because they were tucked inside the wrong tube.
