 Smarter Living Habits

How to rejuvenate yourself when life’s becoming a bit too overwhelming.

Let’s face it: We’ve all hit rockbottom at some point in our lives. Sometimes it feels like a never-ending struggle that can grant us a myriad things. It leaves us unfulfilled and unsatisfied, craving for something that may or not be out of our reach. We wish to succeed professionally, academically, socially – striking a balance in life can tip us off our own balance.

But cliché as it might sound, we can do anything if we put our minds to it. For those moments when helplessness shrouds our ability to get back up, here’s what you can do to search for a silver lining.

Remind yourself of your ambitions/goals

All of us are here for a purpose. Putting our goals in perspective will help us think clearer about how we should go about achieving them. Writing it down like a mantra in our phones, notebooks, or as fridge magnets can help fill us with the determination that we thought we’ve lost.

Practice mindfulness

Accepting our raw feelings as they are, free of judgements can make us aware of the present without contaminating them with ill-thoughts. Remaining engaged with the moment in hand compels us to return our focus to what is important to us. So take time out to take a deep breath, meditate and shun negative thoughts.

Accept your imperfections

We’re human and bound to make mistakes. So instead of strangling yourself for it, learn to accept your human-ness and give yourself a break once in a while. We are not our mistakes nor our misfortunes, it’s about how we cope and learn from them that grants us respect. As Adam Osbourne put it, “The most valuable thing you can make is a mistake – you can’t learn anything from being perfect.”

Don’t forget to prioritize your well-being

We often overlook our mental and physical health when we’re too busy. Our attention should just as much be given to our well-being as to other preoccupations. Not only will this yield positive results in work but reduce stress levels. Sleep well, eat well and look after yourself as much as possible.

Stay true to yourself

Sometimes we tend to stray from ourselves when hit by unexpected circumstances. Sometimes we’re forced to think otherwise in the hope that we will better be able to achieve what we want. To think differently isn’t wrong as long as we stay true to ourselves. No one knows us better than we do. That’s why only we can deduce what’s right for us and what’s not. Trust your instincts and never drown out your inner voice.
