Six electrocuted, four drowned as rain continues to batter Karachi

KARACHI: After starting on Thursday afternoon, rain continued to pound Karachi on third consecutive day on Saturday (today) as well.
The fourth spell of monsoon rain is expected to end this evening. Thundershowers were received across the megalopolis including Defence Housing Society, Clifton, Sea View, Clifton, Korangi, Landhi, Old City areas, Burns Road, Saddar, Shara e Faisal, Baloch Colony, Shah Faisal, Malir, Lyari and other areas.

The fresh spell of rain has claimed 10 lives as six people were electrocuted and four others were drowned. Two people got injured when a huge billboard fell on them near Metropole Hotel. Following the incident, Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani has directed the concerned authorities to get all the big billboards removed from the metropolis.
Street and arteries were submerged in rain and sewage mixed waters as drainage system was choked at many points because of scattered garbage. Power supply to major areas were shut down for several hours intermittently.
The Pakistan Army is busy draining the water and the Inter Services Public Relations said that rescue teams were ready for deployment if the situation worsened.
The National Disaster Management Authority in coordination with the Frontier Works Organisation cleared most of the Gujjar Nullah, Korangi Nullah and Mawach Goth Nullah. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said that he would make names the people public who were involved in encroachment of storm water drains in the city.
