KARACHI: Six bank employees arrested for stealing the gold kept as mortgage at a bank in Karachi.
According to details, staff members of a private bank looted gold jewellery from lockers which were mortgaged in exchange for loan of Rs79 crore by different clients.
When the audit team of the JS Bank visited the branches at Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar in the East Zone for the annual audit, they found that the gold kept in the lockers was missing and it was replaced with artificial jewellery.
A case of theft in Gulistan-e-Johar branch of the bank was registered at Shahra-e-Faisal police station while a case of theft at Gulshan-e-Iqbal branch was registered at Aziz Bhatti police station.
According to the FIR registered on the complaint of General Manager Zulfiqar Abidi at Shahra-e-Faisal police station, a three-member audit team reached the branch at Gulistan-e-Jauhar on August 2.
The complainant told police that the team opened seal of 50 bags to check gold, but they found that it contained counterfeit jewellery.
Zulfiqar Abidi said that the audit team then checked all the 223 bags of gold and found that 150 bags of gold were missing and had been replaced with fake jewellery.
He said that 28 consumers took loans of Rs55 crore from the bank by mortgaging gold.
The private bank has named Farah Mansoor, branch manager, Adeel Latif, gold finance executive, Daniel Safdar Kalhar, relationship manager, Zulfiqar Junejo and others in the gold theft case.
According to a case filed at Aziz Bhatti Police Station by Deputy Manager Rehan Ahmed Yousufi, the audit team had visited Gulshan-e-Iqbal Branch on August 4 and when they opened seals of gold bags they found that the gold was replaced with artificial jewellery.
He told police that 11 customers had pledged gold in the bank and taken a loan of Rs. 24 crore in return.
The private bank nominated Agha Mansoor, Branch Manager, Kamran, Operations Manager, Muhammad Saleem, Relationship Manager and Adeel, Gold Relationship Manager in the FIR.
According to police, six people, including a woman involved in gold theft, were arrested.
