Sindh approves creating Kiamari district in Karachi; more districts on the anvil
KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet on Thursday gave green light to create a new district in Karachi comprising Kiamari and adjacent areas of district West.
The areas lying in the new district, Kiamari, include SITE area, Baldia Town, port areas and Mauripur. The cabinet meeting mulled over making Lyari a district as well and bifurcate district East too.
The Kiamari district will make seven districts in Karachi, along with East, West, Central, South, Malir and Korangi. The most populated district of Karachi is Central.
Sindh chief minister has sought more suggestions to divide the megalopolis in more districts. The provincial ministers also proposed dividing Khairpur in two districts.
The creation of new district will allegedly help vote bank of the Pakistan Peoples Party in elections. The Karachi mayor has already failed to deliver in the megalopolis, while the Sindh government is blamed for not providing funds to be spent here. The mayor wants more powers and funds to resolve issues of the city.
