SHC directs ECP to issue schedule for LG polls in Karachi, Hyderabad
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to issue a schedule for local bodies elections in Karachi and Hyderabad cities of Sindh.
The petition was filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamat-e-Islami (JI) against the Sindh government’s move to postpone the LG polls of Karachi and Hyderabad.
The Sindh High Court ordered that the Election Commission of Pakistan will issue the schedule of the local bodies elections, in addition to this, the SHC ordered the Sindh government to provide personnel to the ECP for the peaceful conduct of the LG polls.
Earlier, the Sindh Cabinet had approved the proposal to delay the LG polls by another 90 days, after which there were fears that the elections in Karachi would be postponed once again.
The elections were initially scheduled for July 24, but they were delayed due to “bad weather and rains”. Then, polling was set to take place on August 28 and October 24, but the provincial government refused to provide security.
