Polling for 37 vacant seats of the Upper House (Senate) of the Parliament has begun in National Assembly and provincial assemblies. The voting process will continue till 5pm.
Around 78 candidates are contesting from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad. However 11 senators have been already elected unopposed from Punjab.
The major contest is between the opposition (PDM) joint candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani and the government-backed candidate Hafeez Shaikh.
Now the polling is underway for 12 seats each of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 11 of Sindh and two of the federal capital.
Only lawmakers of the Parliament are allowed to vote for Senate election.
According to media reports, the results are expected to be announced at 6pm for Islamabad seats followed by announcements for other assemblies’ winning candidates at around 7pm.
