ISLAMABAD: The Wheat Review Committee has submitted its recommendation to the Economic Coordination Committee of the cabinet to fix minimum support price of the wheat crop as 1400 rupees per 40 kilogram for the current year.
The decision was taken during the meeting of Wheat Review Committee held in Islamabad under the chair of Minister for National Food Security and Research Khusro Bakhtiar.
The committee recommended provincial governments to ban supply of wheat for poultry sector as feed.
It also expressed satisfaction that there is sufficient quantity of wheat stock available in the country to meet the needs of the population.
On Feb 3, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan had said action had been initiated against the Customs officers who failed to curb smuggling of wheat to Afghanistan.
Addressing a public meeting in Sialkot, she had said, “The Federal Investigation Agency is investigating the matter and an inquiry has been launched after identification of the Customs officers involved in wheat smuggling at Quetta and Torkham border.”
Wheat fields in Punjab, that extend over 400,000 acres, have been greatly affected by extreme weather conditions in the province.
According to farmers, rain and increased humidity in the air have posed a threat to crop cultivation this year. “We had worked very hard on these crops but the weather brought us huge losses,” a farmer said.
