Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in Harry Potter films, dies at 72

Scottish-born actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, has died at the age of 72.

Coltrane passed away on Friday at a hospital in Scotland, according to his agent Belinda Wright.

For his role as a tough-minded detective in the 1990s television series Cracker, Robbie Coltrane won the best actor at the British Academy Television Awards three times in a row.

Coltrane’s role in all eight Harry Potter films as Hagrid, the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry’s half-human, half-giant groundskeeper, won him the love and affection of the popular fantasy series’ loyal fans.

In the James Bond thrillers, Golden Eye and The World is Not Enough, Coltrane played a Russian crime boss.

In the 2016 miniseries National Treasure, Robbie Coltrane received acclaim for his portrayal of an adored TV personality who might be hiding a sinister secret.

Coltrane is survived by his sister Annie Rae, as well as his ex-wife Rhona Gemmel and children Spencer and Alice.
