Robber killed as robbery in DHA foiled by resident
According to police, a suspected robber was shot dead by a civilian who himself was hurt while repelling an armed robbery attempt in the Defence region on Monday evening.
According to officials, two accused robbers were detained in a wounded state, while their three remaining companions managed to flee as the robbery attempt got foiled.
Six armed robbers entered a property on Central Street, DHA, Phase-II, for a robbery, according to DIG-South Javed Akbar Riaz. He said the burglars disguised themselves as K-Electric employees and informed someone inside the residence that they had come to react to a complaint about a power outage.
However, sensing danger, Umair, the house owner’s son, confronted the thieves, and following a gunfight, one of the suspects was shot dead on the spot while his five companions attempted to flee.
Security guards hired by locals pursued the fleeing suspects and shot at them, injuring two additional suspects. Meanwhile, the police came and apprehended the injured culprits.
Umair was brought to a neighbouring private hospital for treatment after being injured. The DIG paid him a visit and enquired about his health. As per Dawn reports, the young man, the son of a builder, had a gunshot wound in the abdomen but that his life was not in danger.
The bodies of the deceased and injured suspects were sent to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
Usama Qureshi, a nearby resident, claimed several of his neighbours had hired private guards in response to an increase in house thefts. They had also formed ‘community policing’ as a means of collaborating with the police in order to reduce crime. He commended the guards for their bravery.
According to the DIG, the robbers were part of a group of local criminals. One of the individuals was wanted in connection with a recent robbery in the Frere region.
