NEW DELHI: World-famous singer Rihanna has highlighted the ongoing protests of farmers in India by tweeting a story of CNN on the issue.
She shared the story with a caption, “Why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersPrtest.” The CNN story tells that India has cut internet all around New Delhi, its capital city, as protesting farmers clash with police.
After clashes between police and farmers, several cities of the state bordering Delhi also suffered from blockage of internet.
Rihanna is followed by more than 101 million people on the micro-blogging website and her tweet about the protest has been retweeted by over 219,000 times.
On the other hand, BBC has reported that iron nails, rods, barbed wire, makeshift walls and boulders are used to protect the capital city from the protestors. The security measures have been termed by some farmers as “war-like”.
The protests, which are going on for three months against farmers laws, seem to be the biggest challenge faced by the ruling party so far. The Modi government has offered to suspend the laws but farmers want them repealed.
Farmers have announced another march on Saturday with plan to block highways leading to New Delhi.
