‘Responsibilities come with the freedom of the press’, said IHC judge during Rana Shamim affidavit case
The contempt of court case resumed on Tuesday (today) in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). Rana Shamim has been instructed to submit the original affidavit in court.
Khalid Javed, Attorney General of Pakistan, Ansar Abbasi, Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, former Chief Justice of Gilgit Baltistan, Rana Shamim and other related to the case appeared in the court today.
“There are some responsibilities that come with the freedom of the press,” asserted Justice Athar Minallah emphasizing the fact that freedom of judiciary is somehow interlinked with the freedom of press.
Justice Athar questioned the notarized affidavit from Rana Shamim. The judge asked whether the statement released in the news report was the original statement given by him?
To which former CJ GB nodded in yes. Then the judge asked how the affidavit got leaked?
Rana Shamim answered that he is not aware that how the affidavit got leaked. He further informed the court that the journalist asked him about the authenticity of the statement after covering the news. To which former CJ GB, Rana Shamim confirmed the statement.
Later former CJ GB said that he is unaware of what affidavit was released in the news coverage as he himself has not read it.
To which, Justice Athar Minallah instructed Rana Shamim to submit his response along with the original affidavit in court within five days.
IHC Justice Athar mentioned that the court wants to check that whether the published affidavit in the news is the same as the original one or not.
The case hearing has been adjourned for seven days.
Earlier, Rana Shamim mentioned in a duly notarized affidavit alleged that former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Saqib Nisar interfered in the case hearing of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
