Remembering APS attack, other school massacre incidents
A number of educational institutes have come under attack of terrorists in Pakistan and other parts of the world, inflicting a great loss of lives as the martyrs were the assets for the respective nations. Without a doubt, it has been an unrecoverable loss for the parents and blood relatives of the victims.
The APS massacre, considered to be the second major school attack of the world, happened on 16th of December 2014, when six gunmen of Tehreek-e-Taliban attacked Army Public School, Peshawar. No one knew that their presence in the school would be the biggest nightmare for them. Those terrorists opened gunfire on the students and staff. The ways they opted to spread the terror was to hold them as hostages, and gun them down. They also used bombs against minors. Around 150 lives were lost including 132 children.
Not only Pakistanis, but other nations also stood and expressed solidarity and sorrow for the victims of the APS Attack.
Whereas, the biggest school attack of the following century has been of Beslan school attack. 1,200 children and adults were taken hostage for consecutive three days by Chechen rebels from 1st September, 2004, in Beslan, Russia. It led to killing 330 people, 136 out of them were children. 700 people were seriously injured in this mishap.
93 years ago, in May 1927, Bath Island school encountered a massacre in a bomb attack. “There was a pile of children about five or six under the roof and some of them had arms sticking out, some had legs, and some just their heads sticking out. They were unrecognizable because they were covered with dust, plaster and blood,” wrote local author Monty J. Ellsworth in his 1927 account, The Bath School Disaster.
Following Bath Island attack, Palestinian terrorists attacked Ma’alot in May 1974. Golani brigade showed up in order to rescue the hostages but till that 21 school children and several adults were killed. Correspondingly, on 6th December 1989, E’cole polytechnique massacre resulted in 14 deaths of students. Moreover, Dunblan primary school attack (1996) and Columbine school bombing (1999) are recorded as 4th and 5th most lethal massacre respectively in the history.
Nonetheless, Erfurt school massacre (2002) and Tasso da Silveira Municipal School attack (2011) contributed in mass destruction of human lives.
An ultimate unbearable loss has been recorded resulting in generating terror and fright among the people mainly students and parents. Nations really deserve harmony and peace and should not be under the influence of risking their lives.
