ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a telephone conversation Thursday with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, addressing the situation arising from the rapid spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Foreign Minister Qureshi said Pakistan is deploying all the resources available to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and that its effects.
He praised the timely steps taken by the Qatari government that had helped to curb Qatar’s disease.
The foreign minister has told his Qatari counterpart about Prime Minister Imran Khans calling for debt relief and reform in order to allow developed countries to free up money to battle the epidemic and help economies.
Qureshi also praised the role the state of Qatar has played in promoting the Afghanistan peace process.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern about the situation in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJ&K), where the coronavirus had spread and deaths were reported.
Continued movement and contact restrictions were imperiling the health and safety of eight million Kashmiris, he said.
He called for an immediate lifting of all restrictions to enable information dissemination and unfettered supply of medicines, as well as other essential items.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also called for the immediate release of all Kashmiri politicians, youth and members of civil society who had languished in Indian jails and were at increased risk of infection.
The Qatari foreign minister thanked Shah Mahmood Qureshi for his call and stressed the steps Qatar is taking to contain the pandemic.
He emphasized the value of learning from the experience of the countries that had successfully managed to contain the disease.
As an significant and timely initiative, Al Thani described Pakistan’s call for debt restructuring for developing countries and claimed that Qatar supported it.
The two ministers emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address the current challenges and agreed to remain closely involved on all matters of mutual interest.
