Punjab govt announces to impose new coronavirus restrictions
LAHORE: The Punjab government on Monday issued new coronavirus restrictions, viewing the growing number of COVID-19 cases across the province.
The provincial government decided to suspend operation of the mass transit transport, including Metro bus, Speedo bus and Orange Line train.
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar said an effective lockdown will be imposed from Apr 1 in districts with more than 12 percent positivity ratio. “Shops will remain closed two days a week, while they will be opened until 6:00 pm for five days,” he said in a statement.
However, he said, the government was not imposing restrictions on economic activities as it could not afford to shut down industries and other businesses. The industry of transport and construction would continue to work as usual, he added.
CM Buzdar said a complete ban will be imposed on wedding events from Apr 1, as neither indoor nor outdoor ceremonies will be allowed. Parks will also be closed, he said.
He said the COVID-19 positivity ratio was 21 percent in Lahore and 14 percent in Punjab during the last 24 hours and hospitals were already exhausting their capacities in the third wave of the viral disease.
Usma Buzdar said ban on sports, cultural, social and other events will continue.
