Punjab Assembly to elect new Speaker of the house today
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will come face to face again as Punjab Assembly is all set to hold election for new Speaker today (Friday).
The House on Thursday passed a resolution suspending the Assembly Rules, which empowers the Governor to convene a session for Speaker election and no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari at 4 pm on Friday (today).
PTI MPA Sabtain Khan has been nominated by the ruling alliance in Punjab comprising PTI and PML-Q for the post of Speaker, which was vacated due to the election of former Speaker Pervez Elahi as Chief Minister of the House. Muslim League (N) and People’s Party have made Saif ul Malook Khokhar their joint candidate. The nomination papers of both the contestants were cleared after scrutiny by recently appointed Assembly Secretary Inayatullah Lak. Taking an unusual step by transferring his predecessor Muhammad Khan Bhatti, he has been appointed Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister as no Assembly Service Officer has been sent on deputation to a General Service post till date.Earlier, the longest meeting of the Punjab Assembly was held under the chairmanship of Panel of Chairman Waseem Baduzai, In which former Law Minister Raja Bisharat presented a resolution for polling for the Speaker’s seat and to suspend the rules of business for the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari on Friday afternoon, which was approved by majority vote.
Wasim Baduzai adjourned the proceedings till Friday afternoon after reading out the procedure for electing the new Speaker.
