KARACHI: Good news for the residents of Karachi is that in the December’s Fuel Charges Adjustment, the price of electricity will be reduced by Rs. 2.59. A detailed decision in the matter will be issued later.

According to details, Karachi Electric (KE) had requested for a reduction of 1.79 per unit of electricity under the December’s Fuel Charges Adjustment, which was heard by NEPRA Chairman Tauseef H. Farooqi.

During the hearing, NEPRA made some further adjustments at the request of K Electric and said that under the December fuel charges adjustment, electricity would be decreased by Rs2.59 per unit. K Electric told Chairman NEPRA that the main reason for the decreasing of electricity under the December adjustment was the low use of furnace oil.

Chairman NEPRA asked what happened to the gas supply agreement between K Electric and Sui Southern? While he was informed that talks were being held with Sui Southern. Chairman NEPRA inquired whether K Electric could arrange fuel from anywhere other than Sui Southern? CFO K-Electric Amir Ghaziani said that alternative fuel arrangements are also being reviewed.

During the hearing, Tanveer Bari, a representative of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also demanded a technical audit of K Electric’s power plants.
