Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has defeated Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in by-election for PP-38 Sialkot IV, contested on Wednesday.
The provincial seat was considered as a stronghold of PML-N. Chaudhry Ahsan Saleem Baryar, the 26-year-old PTI candidate, has succeeded in the bypolls, according to unofficial results announced on Wednesday night. Baryar received 60,588 votes against PML-N ‘s Chaudhry Tariq Akhtar Subhani who got 53,571 votes.
Earlier, PML-N had never lost the seat in various elections. Releasing a video message on social media, the winning candidate thanked PTI leadership, workers and people of the constituency for their trust and support.
Backed by Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid group (PML-Q), Ahsan Baryar is the son of the party’s provincial leader Muhammad Saleem Baryar.
During the polling, clashes were witnessed between the workers of PML-N and PTI whereas the voting process was also affected due to rain.
Meanwhile, police arrested five people after booking them for displaying arms at various polling stations.
Responding to by-poll results, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said that victory or defeat was to be decided when (free and fair) elections would be held.
“There will be no victory or defeat in selection,” she alleged.
The seat fell vacant after the death of the PML-N lawmaker Choudhary Khush Akhtar Subhani who claimed the seat in 2018 general election.
